January 14-18

January 14-18

Welcome Back!!
I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas break!  I loved hearing how all the children spent their holidays.  I really missed them and I am very thankful to be back into the swing of things.

Math- We started Unit 5 in Investigations which deals with landmark and large numbers.  We have been working on our 1,000 charts while practicing reading and writing numbers to 1,000.  We have also been adding and subtracting multiples of 10 and 100 to locate more numbers on our 1,000 charts including playing a game called Changing Places.  While we continue to get back into the swing of things please continue working with your child on multiplication facts and the need to understand and know these fluently in order to help them with larger division facts.  We are also continuing to work on Minute Math each morning, which helps the students practice, a variety of math concepts.  We will start, this week, having our Minute Math quizzes on Thursday.
***If your child needs more practice with math strategies please go to the link below.
Please watch the video and then practice with more problems.  You may also use the thin Math Investigations textbook to help your child.
Reading/Language Arts: We are continuing to read The Tale of Despereaux.  We will finish this book soon and begin another read aloud.  We are on week 7 of our DOL.  Please encourage your child to look over their DOL each night.  I have discussed with the students that we are going to have vocabulary tests each week for the rest of the year.  We will no longer have just a spelling test.  The vocabulary tests will include a section on the test where they have to spell the word correctly.  It is very important that students continue to broaden their vocabulary to help with their reading and writing skills.
Social Studies: Students will be tested on Wednesday on the causes of the American Revolution. (They have known about this test since last week. They have also been told to study over their notes each night since January 7, 2013.) We will be moving into chapter 12 called “the Revolutionary War”.  The students did a wonderful job with our mini reenactment.  They were great while they were being “taxed” and they even wrote a declaration of independence to Mr. Lawry regarding all the harsh laws he had put into place.  We had wonderful discussions making the connections of how they felt with how the colonists must have felt.  Please make sure to ask them all about our study.
