January 22-25

January 22-25

The kids had a wonderful time getting to play in the snow for a short time on Thursday.  It is always so much fun seeing the kids get excited about the snow! I hope everyone had a wonderful long weekend!!

 Reminders:
*Graded papers are due on Thursday, January 24.  Please make sure to go through the graded papers with your child going back over their mistakes.  It is a good idea to use a different colored pen and rework the problems where they made mistakes.  They also love to teach you what they have learned and different strategies we use at school.

*Book orders are due this coming Thursday, January 24.  Ordering online is very easy and fast.  Our class code is JT2TW and you can order at http://clubs.scholastic.com/about/index.shtml.

*4th Grade Career Fair Day is February 15, 2013.

*Februrary 25, 2013 is Beef O' Brady night.  Please come out to support the fourth grade.  Whichever 4th grade class gets the most support will win a $50 gift-card to Office Depot for classroom items.  Please make sure to put this date on your calendar.

*February 26, 2013 we will go on a field trip to American Village.  I will send more information home soon.  Please mark this date on your calendar.

Math- We are still learning from Unit 5 in Investigations which deals with landmark and large numbers.  We learned and practiced three different addition strategies for large numbers and we worked with our 1,000 charts.  We will be learning different subtraction strategies for large numbers.  We are working with a 10,000 chart while practicing reading and writing numbers to 10,000 (how many 10's, 100's, and 1,000's are in 10,000).  We are also continuing to work on Minute Math each morning, which helps the students practice, a variety of math concepts.
**Please remember Minute Math quizzes are on Thursday.
***If your child needs more practice with math strategies please go to the link below.
Please watch the video and then practice with more problems.  You may also use the thin Math Investigations textbook to help your child.

Reading/Language Arts: We are continuing to read The Tale of Despereaux.  We will finish this book soon and begin our study on inferencing.  We are on week 8 of our DOL.  Please encourage your child to look over their DOL each night.
I put this memo in the last news blogpost.  I have discussed with the students that we are going to have vocabulary tests each week for the rest of the year.  We will no longer have just a spelling test.  The vocabulary tests will include a section on the test where they have to spell the word correctly.  It is very important that students continue to broaden their vocabulary to help with their reading and writing skills.

Social Studies: We are continuing our study of the Continental/British Armies and the Constitution.  We will begin discussing the Bill of Rights/ Preamble within the next week.
**I sent home information about the Wax Museum with your child on Tuesday.  A checklist was attached and should be read and signed by both your child and you.  Please check the letter and checklist for the due dates for the PowerPoint presentation, speech, portrait, and Wax Museum.  Tuesday each student drew out a name of the famous person they will be researching for the Wax Museum and Mr. Austin (Art teacher) will be helping students with their portraits during art class.  We will be working on parts of this project at school, but some of the work (researching) will be done at home.  The letters and information the children took home Tuesday gives more details.  After I check for the parents signature on Thursday you may keep the letter at home.

Please email me if you have any questions.
Your children are such a joy!  I truly enjoy learning with them everyday!
Mrs. Wilkes
